Hydra Decommissioning

The Hydra cluster will be decommissioned on 24 November 2011.

Hydra has given great service to SA researchers since it was installed in 2003. At the time it was the second fastest supercomputer in Australia and ranked 106 in the world. However it is now so old that it is no longer cost-effective to keep it running.

Current users of Hydra can instead use the main eRSA supercomputer, Corvus. Submitting jobs on Corvus is essentially the same as for Hydra, and software applications on Hydra are also installed on Corvus, or can be installed on request. See the Corvus user guide http://www.ersa.edu.au/corvus_guide for more information.

Through an ARC LIEF grant, two new supercomputers will be installed at the University of Adelaide and Flinders University. These should approximately double the existing capacity at each site. This new equipment is expected to be operational later this year at Flinders and early next year at Adelaide. eRSA users will be able to make use of these machines. Details on how to access these new facilities will be provided once they are operational.

Please contact the eRSA service desk servicedesk@ersa.edu.au if you have questions or would like further assistance in moving from Hydra to Corvus.
